PDF open in a different window

Hello and happy Friday all!

I think this has been asked before, but I cannot find an answer. I am having issues with our PDF’s not opening in a separate window when we insert in media browser. This has been happening off and on for a while now. Is anyone else having this issue and is there a solution? I swear at one point we were able to open in a separate window.

thank you-

Happy Friday!

Yes, we are still having this issue, it’s one of those things that we just assume will never get fixed since “workaround” often equates to “case closed” in spite of the inconvenience. The workaround is to turn the pdf into a web link.

For anyone new to Ethos - Adding a PDF, and then choosing Target - New Window (_blank) to open a PDF in a new tab does not work. You select New Window and Save, but when you test it, it will NOT open in a new tab, and when you go back to look at the link, it will have reverted to Target -
To make the PDF open in a new tab:

  1. add the pdf as you normally would (using insert media browser button)
  2. Highlight the link and click the link button in the toolbar
  3. Copy the link
  4. remove the pdf you just added
  5. Type in what you want people to see as your pdf name/link, highlight, and click the link button again
  6. Paste the link of the pdf as your link (be sure to add “https://” as the “protocol”)
  7. Go to Target and choose New Window (_blank)

Thanks, Julie, for confirming. We have a lot for a course and the workaround is a pain. Maybe one day there will be a fix.

I agree this is a continuing frustration. I appreciate bringing this to the community’s attention and sharing the workaround.
