Just wondering if anyone utilizes the discussion board in learning groups and if so what are your thoughts? Pros/Cons, etc.
From one of my program managers:
We don’t currently use discussion boards. It has a lot of limitations for what we wanted to do such as the learners won’t get an email if someone comments on their posts.
We’ve tried using the discussion boards in a couple of different ways over the years and they’ve never proven to work as well as we’d hoped. The biggest challenge is the need for ongoing, active management to keep content up to date. We’ve relied on our members to perform this function and they quickly burn out and the boards stagnate. If you’re going to try using these, I’d suggest developing a content development plan at the outset so you have a strategy for posting new content to keep site users engaged.
