We are new to Ethos and our membership wants our search functions on Ethos to be enhanced to be able to find courses and topics more easily. Right now, we have our courses tagged with taxonomy so they can be filtered in the Course Catalog. There is also a search bar at the top, but it doesn’t seem to be pulling the courses list by that taxonomy. The search bar seems to be looking at the text on the course overview page to populate the list. I have two questions for the community:
- How do you usually enhance the search capabilities for your users?
- Does your search bar work similarly?

Our taxonomy works on our catalog page and is built on two fields: Activity Type and Topics. The visitor has to click on a keyword on our right rail which is a predefined search. The search box doesn’t provide a way to get to the taxonomy terms. Our Activity Type is a primary field. To get anything to show up at all, the Activity Type has to be populated. Our Topics (secondary) work, but only if the primary is populated.

We also have a set of prebuilt searches that access our secondary topics on our home page (scroll to bottom), under the heading Activity Topics. I hope that this helps.

Similar to Dave’s set up, we created tiles on our home page and linked the url that is created from the filter to that tile. Scroll down and select “Conferences” or “On Demand Learning” as examples here: Continuing education portal for healthcare professionals | University of Idaho SHAMP |.
