"Take Course" Button Alternative

Is it possible to make the “take course” button say different things for different courses? (e.g. “Begin Evaluation” for live/asynchronous courses, and “Start Course” or “Continue” for enduring/asynchronous courses)

I’ve experimented with string overrides, but those are global and I don’t want to change “Take Course” across our whole site. Is there another way other than the string override solution?

Any recommendations & thoughts welcome!

We are also interested in this. . . as we have had some learners get confused with the Register tab always being REGISTER. People do not realize it is a tab but think it is a button. I would like it to match the Start button or possible have some functionality. Thoughts?

Hi all, this was posted as a new feature request back in 2024, and before that in 2022. It’s a feature we’d love to have because we see the same issues you do.

Our current fix has been to use custom CSS entered in the activity’s description WYSIWYG editor that hides the Take Course Button, and then create a new button in the Activity Instructions box with the preferred text. It’s not a quick fix by any means but it is functional and we can customize it to be different for unenrolled/enrolled/anonymous users.

We are interested as well. Having it so you can edit a button for any activity would be ideal (or even to be able to rename course tabs - dreaming big here). Enduring, live, and in person conferences are all different. Similarly, the login/register message is in an awkward spot in the course. We have created our own button with a message on the Overview page for “Create Account”. Having more flexibility within each activity would be nice. One size does not fit all. :smile:

Would really appreciate flexibility around this design element. User ease and clarity is always the goal and this causes confusion.

We had our tab changed to “Get Started!” and that has worked well for us. It has fit all circumstances we’ve encountered, whether enduring, managing registration, just getting a certificate, or linking to an external website.

Did you put in a ticket to get that change made? I think Get Started sounds better if we cannot edit it depending on the activity type.

We asked for that change when we first started with Ethos, but I would start by putting in a ticket. I’d be happy to talk to anyone about this more. You can also see how it looks on different pages at cme.uchicago.edu.
